Equine Artist Of The Month: Whitney L Anderson

If anyone knows a thing or two about collage, it’s Whitney L Anderson.

Collaging is something I have fond memories of doing with friends in school; however, Whitney takes it to a whole new level. Her hand-cut collaging process may seem simple–sketching, snipping, gluing, sealing–but the degree of detail and difficulty is nothing short of impressive. A standard 35×48″ collage takes Whitney roughly 30 hours to complete.

Her unique style developed through combining both the recycled materials she loves and the subjects she adores (high fashion and horses). Each collage is cleverly made from old issues of women’s lifestyle magazines, such as Glamour, AllureVogueVanity Fair, and Marie Claire. Whitney has the rare ability to give those discarded magazines character and a sense of life. Transforming paper waste into slick and pattern-focused equine art–brilliant!

Look closely and you will notice details that connect Whitney’s subject to the magazines used. For example, Regal Rap incorporates actual rap from dozens of Paper magazine issue clippings featuring Travis Scott:

I’m a long-time admirer of Whitney’s collages, but among my favorites is Red Carnival. It was part of a theme-color series. There’s just something so classy about the contrast of red to black and white. The original was purchased by Jack Horner, a Montana State University paleontologist who served as science adviser to the original Jurassic Park movie and some of the subsequent ones. Obviously, then, I’m not alone in adoring this one!

Whitney uses her collages to give back to her local Washington equine community. She’s donated several to @serenityequinerescue’s annual Hearts & Horses fundraiser. Philanthropy through self-expression and creativity warms my heart!

In addition to collages, Whitney also specializes in drawing and acrylic painting. Recognize the brand in this piece?
